Oxford Circus has the X Factor

Sustainable Urban Drainage

Early in November 2009 the London mayor Boris Johnson opened the Oxford Circus diagonal pedestrian crossing. Claimed to be the largest of its type in Europe, the crossing has been inspired by a similar design in the Shibuya district of Tokyo in Japan. The scheme which was led by Westminster City Council involves the re-phasing of the junction’s traffic lights so that vehicles from all four arms of the junction are stopped simultaneously for 30 seconds to enable people to walk across safely. Areas of nearby Princes Street and Little Argyll Street are being part pedestrianised to create areas for al fresco dining and street entertainment. This is a triumph for UK design and one demonstrating the principles of traffic/pedestrian interflow.

SMA has been actively incorporating principles of traffic/pedestrian interflowin urban projects for many years. To discuss urban development projects, please contact Stuart Atkinson or Stewart Andrews.

Soaking it up with SUDS

Following the devastating summer of 2007, a new Flood and Water Management Bill has been published that seeks to set out the responsibilities for flood and water management. Planning applications will now refer to a new SUDS, Sustainable Urban Drainage System, approving body. The new standards will address reducing runoff, improved water quality, enhanced bio-diversity and will be a ‘material planning’ consideration.

For more information, please contact either Jeremy Muscroft or Paul Underhay.
