Access Appraisal

For any type of development proposal, providing access onto the existing highway network is a fundamental consideration. At SMA, we will undertake a site access appraisal early in the process, to ensure access can be provided and to advise on the most appropriate and suitable location.

The adequacy of an access will be based on a number of factors, including visibility splays, geometry, gradient and width. As part of our access appraisals, we would typically undertake the following:

  • Completion of detailed site visit to view topography and local environment
  • Review existing road conditions
  • Identification of access options and implications in terms of land take, form, feasibility/costs and physical impact upon topography (land, buildings, utilities)
  • Review of potential access options for all modes (vehicular, pedestrian, cycle, public transport)
  • Identification of particular constraints and issues to be addressed in more detail prior to planning
  • Initial capacity assessments and refinement of preferred options
  • Confirmation of existing highway boundary
  • Advise on whether visibility, geometry on an access complies with current standards
  • Identify improvements where necessary

If you require any advice in relation to accessing a site then please give either Martin Ohrland or Dave Wiseman a call on 01635 86 77 11.
