Transport

Transport Assessments have become an integral part of the planning and development process.

Guidance on transport assessment, published by the Department for Transport (DfT), has increased the level of detail required by approving authorities when assessing impacts for both strategic and local development proposals.

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) promotes sustainable transport as an integral part of new development and sets out the transport planning policy guidance at a national level, including:

  • Promotion of more sustainable transport choices for both people and for moving freight;
  • Promotion of accessibility to jobs, shopping, leisure facilities and services by public transport, walking and cycling and
  • Reducing the need to travel, especially by car.

SMA has extensive experience and capabilities in the field of transport planning. This extends to initial feasibility studies, delivering travel demand management strategies and undertaking accessibility, sustainability and traffic impact appraisals for a wide range of private and public development proposals, major capital projects and infrastructure improvement schemes.

The scale and complexity of the projects range from small residential developments to new settlements and town centre management schemes. We also have a successful track record in representing developers, objectors and planning and highway authorities at Examinations in Public, Planning Inquiries and Appeals.
