Road Safety, NMU and Quality Audit

Road Safety Audits

The requirement for a Road Safety Audit is mandatory for new and improved trunk road infrastructure and is increasingly becoming a requirement and best practice for works away from the trunk road network. Stuart Michael Associates provides a Road Safety Audit team that is fully independent of its design teams. SMA can therefore undertake audits of externally or internally designed schemes.

Road Safety Audits are undertaken in compliance with the standards detailed in Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (HD19/03) and, where appropriate, local authority standards.

Different stages of Audit are undertaken throughout the design and construction process, with detailed audit reports submitted as part of the technical approval process. Following the opening of a road scheme, further Audits are undertaken after 12 months and 36 months, to review the operation and road accident performance of the scheme.

Non-Motorised User Audits

Non-Motorised User (NMU) Audits are increasingly being requested by local authorities and the Highways Agency for both development and highway schemes. NMU Audits consider how new or modified junctions or highway schemes affect pedestrians, cyclists, equestrians and disabled users. Stuart Michael Associates has experience of undertaking Non-Motorised User Audits for a range of schemes and locations in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (HD42/05).

Quality Audits

Quality Audit of street design is outlined in Manual for Streets, Manual for Streets 2: Wider Application of the Principles, Local Transport Note 1/08 and Traffic Advisory Leaflet 5/11. Quality Audit can include Road Safety Audit (RSA), cycle audit/review and NMU Audit along with a number of other components such as street character review, access audit, parking audit and community street audit to provide a comprehensive review of a new street design or changes to an existing street. Stuart Michael Associates can carry out Quality Audit of street designs for both private sector and public sector clients.
