Air Quality

The potential impact from new sources of air pollution is becoming a real issue for Local Authorities and needs to be considered during the planning process for any development. SMA is able to undertake local air quality assessments for different sources by employing a range of tools. These include screening assessments, dispersion modelling and pollutant monitoring.

Discussions are held with Local Authorities early on in the planning stage to agree a scope for the assessment. We then produce a comprehensive and robust air quality impact assessment. Our reports include qualitative and quantitative assessments of changes, providing sufficient information for a planning decision to be made.

Previous projects include Department for Transport’s Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) screening assessments for residential developments, detailed dispersion modelling of residential developments with Combined Heat and Power plants and stack emissions from proposed industrial processes.

As part of the Section 106 Agreement for a major development in Berkshire, SMA is monitoring nitrogen dioxide levels at four locations using diffusion tubes. The project is expected to continue for a number of years, as the development is built-out over time.
