Stuart Michael Associates has been working alongside the Education Business Partnership, to encourage young girls to think about careers in High Tech. The programme, which runs in a number of Secondary Schools throughout the UK, invites companies to run a session about their jobs, to help inspire the next generation.
During these sessions at Little Heath School and Denefield School, students were given 30 minutes to create their own town. With a variety of criteria and challenges to consider (including impacts on flood plains, AONB’s and SSSI’s), the pupils worked well together in groups to come up with some ideas of what was needed for their virtual towns.
The second task required the girls to build the tallest giraffe from paper straws and masking tape. With only 20 minutes, the students had to think quickly about the structural design of their giraffe; how was the head to be supported? How will long legs be kept sturdy? These challenges are faced every day by employees at Stuart Michael Associates.
Both exercises built upon teamwork, managing time, leadership skills and working with new people. Feedback from the session was great:
‘with everything we did it showed us how to work in a team loads team effort and resilience and combining ideas can make something good.’
‘I want to do a job in engineering.’
Overall this was an extremely positive experience for both the students and Stuart Michael Associates. Hopefully we’ll see some of the girls in our office in the future!
Stuart Michael Associates are very pleased to see that construction of the residential site off Hope Road, Ryde is well under way, with show homes to be completed soon. The site has planning consent for 80 dwellings, which will be a mix of house types. SMA has assisted the Client Captiva Homes with the detailed civils design and continue to advise on other sites.
