What is a Travel Plan?

A travel plan aims to reduce the environmental, social, and economic impacts of transport by promoting sustainable alternatives like walking, cycling, public transit, car-sharing, and electric vehicles. Typically required by local authorities as a condition of planning permission for new housing developments, these plans help reduce reliance on single-occupancy car trips—an increasingly important goal as the population grows.

SMA works with developers to create and implement travel plans that align with local authority requirements and encourage sustainable travel among new residents.

What is the Role of SMA’s Travel Plan Coordinator?

The Travel Plan Coordinator (TPC) at SMA is responsible for implementing, and monitoring sustainable travel plans for new developments. Their role is to promote alternatives to single-car journeys, working closely with developers and local authorities to ensure plans are effective and well-received.

The TPC engages residents through travel plans, quarterly newsletters, site visits, and direct feedback, encouraging sustainable travel choices. They also collect and analyse travel data—typically via surveys—to assess progress and adjust strategies as needed.
